Beginning in 2004, “Indonesian Idol” became Indonesia’s largest youth talent show. Millions of Indonesians view this show every week.
Most Winners of Indonesian Idol Are Christians
Thousands of Indonesian youth take part in this popular show. They come from all kinds of backgrounds, cultures and religions. In 2004 history was made when the winner of the talent search was a Christian woman. A Christian man won the contest the next year. In fact, most of the Grand Finalists since the beginning of the show have been Christians.
In daily life, we find a lot of Christians with great singing voices. We wonder if it is because Christians have built-up their voices in church and prayer meetings. Christian gatherings are almost always filled with singing. Is this why their singing voices are trained so well? Is this why Christians develop such a talent for singing?
The Prophets Sang to God
Singing for God has been a common practice of the prophets since before the time of Isa Al-Masih. During the time of King David he and the Israelites danced in the presence of the Lord. They sang while playing all kinds of musical instruments. They sang for God to rescue them from their enemies. All praises were lifted up with singing and dancing (2 Samuel 6:5). King David sang to God when he was joyful. He also sang to God to express his sadness (2 Samuel 1:17).
Expressing Our Hearts to God
There are many ways for us to express to God what’s in our hearts. We do this through dancing and singing. We also do this through prayers spoken from the heart and expressed with moving our lips. We need to express ourselves to God just like it says in the Gospel: “Speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19).
God Listens to Our Songs
God receives songs of praise and worship from people. He also receives songs of praise from those who are already in heaven. “And they sang a new song…” (Revelation 5:9). The new song is a song of salvation by those who have received from Jesus Christ eternal redemption.
