What Is Meant by the Term “Son of God”?

29 December 2009 by Web Administrator 12 Comments

Anak Allah

Does the Bible teach that God begat Isa? In other words, is Isa is the result of a biological/sexual union? This is the understanding many people have who have not yet studied and understood the teaching of the Bible. In the view of Christians and of the Bible such teaching is the greatest slander!

The Bible never taught that God approached a woman, and from this biological relationship that woman gave birth to Isa the Son of God. There is no Christian who teaches this teaching, which belittles and slanders God.

A Metaphorical Term

The Son of God, according to the Bible and in the view of Christians, always has a metaphorical or figurative meaning. Isn’t the word “son/child” often used metaphorically in the culture and language of Indonesia? Isn’t it so that when the following questions are proposed, the answer always is “NO?”

father-son

Has a ship ever produced a “son of a ship?” Has a hill ever given birth to “son of a hill?” Has a sentence ever given birth to a “son of a sentence?” Has a ladder ever given birth to a “son of a ladder”? Has a river ever given birth to a “son of a river?” Has the city of Jakarta ever given birth to a “son of the city of Jakarta>” Has a village ever given birth to a “son of a village?”

“Son of God” = “Word of God”

In the Bible, calling Isa the “Son of God” as the same as calling Him the “Word of God.” His existence as the Son of God is not based on his birth in Bethlehem and his death on the hill of Golgotha. The Son of God existed before the creation of the universe. The Son of God is eternal in the essence of God All One and Almighty.

Isa Al-Masih is called the Son of God because He perfectly reveals God to humanity. He is the Word of God and perfectly explains the will and character of God to humanity. As the Son and Word of God, Isa shows the love and holiness and salvation of God to humanity.

What Does The Bible Say?

The revelation of God in the Bible found in Hebrews 1:1-3 explains this truth: “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power.”

Kitab-13

The Bible also explains this truth in the Gospel of John 1:1-2, 14: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word (Isa) was God. . . . And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

    The Qur’an clearly states:

“In The Name Of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Say: He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is he beggeten; And there is none like unto him.”

Qs. 19:35 says, “It befits not (the majesty of) Allah that He should take unto Himself a son. Glory be to Him! When he decrees a thing, He says unto it only: Be! and it is.”

So you are saying that Allah is a liar? He is talking about the Christians. Should I point out more proofs to you?

      Dear Russell,

Thank you for your comment. These surahs are correct! Allah cannot beget! Allah’s majesty would be lowered if he were to physically have a son.

As the above article states, Isa is not the physical Son of God. He was not created by Allah. Even the Quran doesn’t say that Allah created Isa. It says, “He said: ‘So (it will be): Thy Lord saith, ‘that is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us’: It is a matter (so) decreed’” (Qs.19:21).

A frequent question is, why did Isa say He was the Son of God, and why does God have a Son? This seems strange to many people.

Here is the answer: For God is almighty, and He cannot be limited by anything. Many people try to limit God, for example, by wanting a certain wind direction when they pray to God. But God cannot be limited.

Thank you for your comment. You are right that God cannot be limited by anything, including our way human thinking. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”
      declares the Lord.”
      (Taurat, Prophet Isaiah 55:8)

    Jasmin,

Allah created Isa(p) in the Qur’an. She said: “O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man hath touched me?” He said: “Even so: Allah creates what He wills: When He hath decreed a plan, He but saith to it, ´Be,´ and it is!” (Surah 3:47). Therefore, Isa(p) is a creation of Allah(swt).

Isa is God who became man according to God’s will, that he was born through the virgin Mary who wasn’t “touched” by man. Isa wasn’t created but a Creator. In the Bible, there is no written “create”. In Luke 1:26-38, it says  “The angel came to her and said, “You are honored very much. You are a favored woman. The Lord is with you. *You are chosen from among many women.”  When she saw the angel, she was troubled at his words. She thought about what had been said. The angel said to her, “Mary, do not be afraid. You have found favor with God. See! You are to become a mother and have a Son. You are to give Him the name Jesus. He will be great. He will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the place where His early father David sat. He will be King over the family of Jacob forever and His nation will have no end.”

What is to be understood by the Angel’s words “… He will be called the Son of the Most High….”? Or the Lord’s words when Jesus was baptized? And kindly explain how the Son of God is God according to John 1:1?

    Blessings.

      Dear Samuel,

Thanks for your comment. When the Angel, the voice from Heaven (the Father God), and the Apostle John called Isa Al-Masih the Son of God, they were telling the divinity of Isa Al-Masih.

Through John 1:1, we could know that Isa Al-masih is God’s Word who manifested into flesh. He is the second member of the Trinity. He came to the world by taking a form of a human being for a mission to redeem us from the bondage of sin and its punishment.

      Blessings.

The Quran clearly states that God cannot have a son (in a biological sense) (Qs 19:35). Isa (Jesus) was born of virgin Mary (Qs 2:87, 3:45) and created in her womb by God (Qs 3:47). The Quran even states that God purified Mary before conception (Qs 3:42).

The Bible also makes it very clear that no biological father was involved in Jesus’ birth. The Holy Spirit anointed Mary’s womb to conceive the Holy One, Jesus (Luke 1:35). So Mary had a son created by God. Isa (Jesus) is the one & only God-Man who is pure (as required subsequently to be the perfect substitute sacrifice for our sin).

      Brian Mallalieu,

Thank you for your comment and we agree with your statements. Both the Bible (Mark 1:35, Matthew 1:23) and the Quran (Qs 2:87, 3:47) clearly state that Isa (Jesus) was anointed through the Holy Spirit of God in the womb of the virgin Mary.

Therefore the Bible (1 John 2:1, John 14:6) and the Quran (Qs 3:46, 43:61) also firmly declare that Jesus is ‘Righteous One’ and ‘the Truth, the Life and the Way to God’.
