Does Performing Hajj Forgive All Sins?

mecca 2While I was enjoying delicious curry with Muslim friends, Ahmed (a Saudi Arabian) said he has performed 25 Hajj pilgrimages! He said even though Muslims are only required to perform Hajj once, he has made many mistakes in life and needed more forgiveness.

Can performing Hajj forgive all sins?

What Does the Hadith Say About Future Sins?

Abu Hurayrah quoted that, “The Muslim Prophet said: Whoever performs Hajj and does not approach his wife for sexual relations nor commits sins (while performing Hajj), he emerge as sinless as a newborn child’” (Al-Bukhari).

Another version of this Hadith quotes Muhammad’s words like this: "Whoever does not have a sexual intercourse or commit sin, his past sins will be forgiven" (At-Tirmithi). According to Islam, a person’s past sins will be forgiven. But what about sins a person commits after the Hajj pilgrimage?

mecca 3A Perfect Hajj Pilgrimage Is Not Enough!

Is it possible for a person to not commit even one sin throughout the entire Hajj? Even if it was possible, what about sins committed after the pilgrimage?

This was Ahmed’s problem. Ahmed did not think all of his sins could be forgiven by performing Hajj. Should he keep performing the Hajj to receive the forgiveness that he longs for? Email us your opinion.

Forgiveness of Sins is Not Based on Our Works

Allah has provided only one way to receive forgiveness of sins – through his mercy and love. Nothing we do, not even performing Hajj, will remove our sins.

The Gospel says, “All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him [Isa Al-Masih] receives forgiveness of sins through his [Isa] name” (Injil, Acts 10:43).

Allah has shown us, “. . . the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus[Isa Al-Masih].  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast” (Injil, Ephesians 2:7-9).
